Educational Philosophy for Cedar and Fur

As a facilitator in a forest school setting, I am dedicated to fostering a learning environment that promotes respect, wisdom, love, courage, honesty, humility, and truth as the seven grandfather teachings from my Métis culture.

I strive to create spaces that celebrate curiosity, cultivate deep connections to the natural world, and that empower every student to thrive as stewards of the land and active participants in their own learning journey. My teaching philosophy is grounded in the principles of collaborative governance, where shared leadership and community engagement play integral roles in shaping the educational experience.

Participant-Centered Learning in Nature's Classroom: At the heart of my educational philosophy is a commitment to participant-centered learning in nature. Here, amidst the trees, streams, and diverse ecosystems, students are invited to explore, inquire, and discover the wonders of the natural world at their own pace and in their own way.

Inquiry-Based Exploration and Nature Immersion: I believe in the power of inquiry-based exploration and nature immersion to ignite curiosity and deepen understanding. By providing hands-on experiences, nature-based activities, and open-ended inquiries, I inspire participants to ask questions, make observations, and develop a profound connection to the land and its inhabitants.

Collaborative Governance and Leadership: Collaborative governance is at the core of our forest school community, where facilitators and participants come together as partners in the educational process. Through shared decision-making, mutual respect, and transparent communication, we co-create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that honors diverse perspectives and values collective wisdom.

Holistic Development in Nature's Classroom: Education in a forest school goes beyond academic achievement; it encompasses the holistic development of the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – in harmony with the natural world. I prioritize nurturing participants’' physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being through outdoor adventures, sensory experiences, and mindfulness practices that foster resilience, empathy, and a deep sense of belonging.

Cultivating Meaningful Connections to the Land: I am passionate about fostering deep, meaningful connections to the land and natural environment. Through Indigenous teachings, traditional ecological knowledge, and experiential learning, I guide participants in developing a profound respect for nature, an understanding of ecological interconnectedness, and a sense of responsibility as caretakers of the Earth.

Lifelong Learning and Environmental Stewardship: As an educator, I am committed to lifelong learning and environmental stewardship, modelling a growth mindset, curiosity, and a deep reverence for the natural world. I empower students to become active agents of change in their communities, advocating for environmental conservation, sustainability, and social justice.

In essence, my educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that learning in a forest school setting has the power to nurture curiosity, foster connection, and inspire a lifelong love of learning and stewardship for the Earth and all its inhabitants.
